Will the film finally be released? Is there a chance for a continuation?
The New Mutants will finally hit theaters, after many changes in release dates and troubled production. Understand how the film, which can be a trilogy, relates to the other X-Men feature films.
THE NEW MUTANTS IS A SUSPENSE MOVIE
The New Mutants is set in a secret facility that experiments on mutants. In the plot, five young people with specialized skills are kept under psychiatric monitoring at the institution controlled by Dr. Cecilia Reyes ( Alice Braga ). She promises to manage the group’s abilities, but her plan is not really what it seems
The film stars Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Blu Hunt, and Brazilian Henry Zaga.
MOVIE WOULD TAKE PLACE IN THE X-MEN: APOCALYPSE TIMELINE
Is Marvel’s new feature film about mutants? Yes. But are the members of the X-Men? Do not.
Initially, the initial draft of the screenplay for The New Mutants would feature Professor Xavier ( James McAvoy ) and Tempest ( Alexandra Shipp ). According to the director and screenwriter Josh Boone, they would appear at the Xavier Institute. Also, the film would be part of the X-Men: Apocalypse timeline, which would allow these characters to appear, the filmmaker revealed to SFX magazine.
However, such a connection would have been ruled out to make the film independent of the rest of the X-Men. Not to mention that, Os Novos Mutantes were filmed in 2017, right after the release of X-Men: Apocalypse, in 2016. As it was postponed several times, it put in doubt the plans for this individual participation. Since then, the X-Men franchise has expanded with Black Phoenix. So, we still don’t know for sure when The New Mutants will be set.
The X-Men cast filmed a similar appearance in Deadpool 2, appearing briefly at Mansion X when Wade Wilson ( Ryan Reynolds ) is complaining about never having seen any mutants other than Colossus ( Stefan Kapicic ) and Megsonic Teen Missile ( Brianna Hildebrand ). It would have been exciting to see something similar happen in The New Mutants.
CONNECTIONS TO THE X-MEN WOULD HAVE BEEN SEVERED BECAUSE OF THE MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE
This goes according to what had already been reported that the new version of the production cut ties with the universe of the X-Men. Thus, according to FandomWire, the protagonists of The New Mutants would be just teenagers with powers and who know nothing about the X-Men. Such a decision by Disney and Marvel Studios would make it possible for the new characters to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the future.
The primary connection with the X-Men, however, is that Magic is the sister of Colossus, a member of the X-Men.
THE NEW MUTANTS MAY WIN TRILOGY
The good news is that Josh Boone intends to do a trilogy about the characters in The New Mutants. Check out what he said to SFX magazine. “In the end, after all this time, I was able to make my film Novos Mutantes, and I am proud of it. What I hope for now is that it will be successful enough that the studio will allow me to complete a trilogy. I have everything planned “. We want that optimism, Boone!
Josh Boone had already revealed in March this year that, if there were Os Novos Mutantes 2, Antonio Banderas would play Emmanuel da Costa, father of Brazilian Roberto da Costa (Henry Zaga), Mancha Solar. The director even called the film “New Mutants: Brazil” (in the original). Banderas’ character would have been featured in the post-credit scene that was never filmed for The New Mutants.
“It was intentional that we didn’t shoot. We always planned to have something at the end of the film that would introduce the villain to the next movie. We even had a cast of actors, but because of the [Disney / Fox] merger and because Marvel has the X-Men now and will do its own thing [with them], there was no reason to shoot, “said Boone.
WHO ARE THE CHARACTERS IN THE NEW MUTANTS?
Rahne Sinclair (or Lupina) was born in Scotland and could change form between human and wolf. The character initially appeared in the 1982 New Mutants comics as one of the founding members of the junior X-Men group. Before being taken by Charles Xavier, Sinclair suffered a dark childhood under the restrictive and abusive religious values of his father, Reverend Craig, who tries to kill her when the mutant abilities manifest.
In the X-Men comics, the girl not only turns into a wolf but can also achieve a hybrid form with the best attributes of both. In his transformed state, Lupine increases his strength, speed, and endurance, in addition to gaining the sensory abilities of a wolf.
In the film, she will be played by Maisie Williams ( Game of Thrones ) and will have an LGBT romance with Mirage.
Illyana Rasputin was first introduced in the comics in 1975, but it was only in December 1983 that she appeared under the title Magic. She became a witch after being raised in the Limbo dimension as a child and trained under the tutelage of Tempest and Kitty Pryde. After taking control of that world, she returns to Earth much older than when she left. Rasputin also has excellent connections – as the surname may suggest, she is the sister of the famous member of the X-Men, Colossus.
In The New Mutants, it will be played by Anya Taylor-Joy ( Fragmentado, Vidro ).
Young Sam Guthrie is another member of the original New Mutants gang that debuted in 1982, and the character has since been part of The X-Force and the X-Men. Before that, Guthrie labored in a coal mine, and it was at some stage in a fatal collapse that the boy’s powers were manifested. As the name implies, the Missile can propel itself through the air at high speed using natural thermochemical energy and is invulnerable while on the move.
In the film, Missile will be played by Charlie Heaton ( Stranger Things ).
Danielle Moonstar, or Mirage, is a heroine American Cheyenne ancestry, who was also one of the first New Mutant classes in Marvel comics, before moving on to several other crime-fighting groups. His skill involves physically manifesting a person’s fears in a realistic illusion. In the comics, it is Mirage’s visions and fears that first put the Demon Bear in contact with the New Mutants, forcing the team to take down the strange entity. This may be shown in the film as well.
In Os Novos Mutantes, she is played by Blu Hunt ( The Originals ).
Mancha Solar is a Brazilian mutant. Roberto da Costa is another of the New Founding Mutants, alongside Missile and Lupine, but his tenure as a superhero would later cover the Avengers and X-Force. Before becoming a superhero, a racially motivated attack triggered his latent mutant abilities. The hero can absorb solar energy with his body and use it as fuel for a variety of purposes, including increased strength, flight, and energy explosions. Sunspot is also able to achieve superior body shape. The disadvantage of Roberto’s mutant power is that he requires a solar source and will look distinctly human if kept in the darkroom for a long time.
In Os Novos Mutantes, Roberto is played by Brazilian actor Henry Zaga ( 13 Reasons Why ).
Dr. Cecilia Reyes
Dr. Cecilia Reyes is the doctor reportedly taking care of the young mutants gathered in her hospital. It has a power of its own and can create a natural force field that protects against attacks. In comics, she feels pain absorbed by her shield.
In the X-Men comics, Reyes is likewise a doctor but has little interest in saving the world, refusing the chance to join the X-Men. Predictably, his attempts to avoid combat are unsuccessful, and Reyes is involved in several critical mutant stories. Moving away from the source material, The New Mutants suggests that Reyes is not necessarily reliable.
In the film, she will be played by Brazilian actress Alice Braga ( Cidade de Deus , Eu sou Lenda , Eduardo e Mônica ).
THE BRAZILIAN HERO HAS ALREADY APPEARED IN THE X-MEN FILMS
Mancha Solar, the Brazilian hero, played by Henry Zaga, has previously appeared in another film in the franchise: X-Men: Days of Future Past. He made a brief appearance in the battle against the Sentinels at the beginning of the film, a fact that disappointed its creator. In production, he was played by Mexican actor Adan Canto.
The shortest film in the X-Men franchise, The New Mutants, is scheduled to premiere on August 27, 2020, in theaters.
